AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Bibi Jagir Kaur has strongly condemned the demolition of the statue of Shere Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh outside the Sikh Gallery at the Royal Fort in Lahore (Pakistan).
Bibi Jagir Kaur appealed to the Government of Pakistan to take stern action against those responsible for desecrating the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh so that such a heinous act does not happen again.
In a statement issued from the SGPC headquarters here today, Bibi Jagir Kaur said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a Sikh king in whose kingdom all had equal rights and no one was discriminated against.
He said that the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was based on the basic principles of the Gurus, which included social equality and religious freedom for all.
Apart from Sikhs, officials of other religions were also stationed at his court.
Bibi Jagir Kaur said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh set an example of secularism by naming gurdwaras as jagirs and showed great respect for other religions.
The SGPC President said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh was one of the elected rulers of the world who did great deeds for the welfare of mankind.
