PATIALA: In first of its kind initiative by the Jail Department to provide the wings to the creative thoughts of Jail inmates, Patiala Jail Administration has come with a trimester magazine having all the content written and canvassed by the inmates.
Jail Minister, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who was on the visit of Patiala Jails, yesterday, unveiled the first copy of this magazine ‘Sochan Di Udaan’ (Flight of Thoughts) by saying that the thoughts expressed by the inmates showcase their inner conscience . This thought provocation process will definitely changed their mindset and we hope they will step toward a society where criminal thoughts would have no space. He said, in fact we are working on an idea to provide the good literature to the jail inmates to make a lawful behavioural change in them. We have arranged some religious literature in first phase that would be provided to the inmates, soon, he added.
He said, not only this, we are also going ahead to honing up vocational skills among the inmates so that they can rehabilitate themselves after getting released from here. Citing example of Patiala Central Jail, Mr Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said, the inmates have started to prepare environment friendly material such as impressive and attractive file covers, grocery bags, handbags and other decorative material from Jute besides the traditional carpenting and other chores. For the female prisoners, the Jute material making goods are a good option as they can start their own ventures after coming out from the Jail. Applauding the efforts being put in by the Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) in this Jail, Jail Minister said the inmates have also been given training certificates so that it could be helpful for them post prison period.
He said the department of Jails have come with a unique initiative of Jail Reforms, in the name of ‘Punjab Ujala’ that would change the lives of inmates completely by various activities. This magazine is also the result of that initiative and would be replicated in other jails in the next phase.
Principal Secretary, Punjab Jails, D K Tewari and ADGP Jails, Parveen Kumar Sinha said that our continuous efforts have bore fruit as the thoughts penned by the Jail inmates have taken a shape of Magazine. We hope this creative thought process will remain continue and we would come up with more issues. They said these activities would definitely change the minds by saying goodbye to the criminal thoughts.
Jail Superintendent, Shivraj Singh Nandgarh while giving more information about the content of the magazine said this has been compiled with 11 of sketches canvassed by the inmates besides 8 poems and three write ups. He said the quality of the content is so high that we can not guess how these creative minds were ever indulged in crime.
Deputy Jail Superintendent, Inderjit Singh Kahlon and Welfare Officer, Jagjit Singh who gave practical hape to the idea conceived by the Jail Department on the suggestion of an inmate said that even the cover page Bhangra team snap also of the inmates. The content was written by the inmates after they were conveyed of the Magazine idea and handed over to us in time.
It is worthwhile to mention that to instill reading habit in the inmates, a small library has also been setup in the Jail, where books related to religious and other topics have been providing by the Jail Administration.
